About this event
Experimental Watercolor Workshop
Nan Rumpf
Come and join us as we explore experimental techniques which can be used for both representational and abstract artwork. In this three day workshop we will try our hands at using acrylic drip resist with watercolor for a textural effect, prism technique with patterns for a contemporary look, adapting a Paul Klee technique for watercolor, and using clear con-tact adhesive shelf lining paper for lifting and spattering paint.
Expand your repertoire of watercolor techniques and explore new possibilities for this wonderful flowing medium.
suggested materials
- Watercolor paper: 8 half sheets of 140 cold press 15 X 22 inches Saunders Waterford is preferred, but Fabriano or Arches papers will also work). Cheap paper will not give you good results. You can buy it in full sheets which can be reduced to desired size
- three stiff backboards slightly larger than your watercolor paper so you have enough room to tape your paper down (Plexiglass 1/8” thick works great or you can use stiff carboard
- watercolor paint: Bring artist quality watercolor paint in tubes in the following colors: Winsor & Newton Raw Sienna, Holbein Carmine, Holbein Cerulean Blue, White watercolor gouache
- Also bring:
- one cool yellow (Lemon Yellow or Winsor Yellow or Hansa Yellow Light)
- one warm yellow (Indian Yellow or Yellow Orange or Hansa Yellow Deep)
- one cool red (Permanent Alizarin or Permanent Rose or Anthraquinoid Red or Quinacridone Rose )
- one warm red (Poppy, or Perylene Scarlet or Scarlet Lake)
- one greenish blue (Phthalo Blue or Winsor Blue-green shade)
- one reddish blue (French Ultramarine Blue or Ultramarine Blue)
- one brown (Burnt Sienna)
- you may also bring any other tube colors you like)
- watercolor brushes: Bring whatever brushes you like to use but make sure you bring a soft wash brush (1&1/2 or 2 inches wide (a Winsor & Newton series 965 is a good wash brush if you don’t already have a wash brush)
an assortment of your own photo references (Make sure you include a least one good photo of a white flower showing clear light and shadow areas)
- a muffin tin or four shallow cups for preparing wash colors
- a misting bottle
- paper towels
- sea sponge
- artist tape
- 2 water jar or other containers, one for rinsing brushes, and for clean water for pre wetting
- one 3B or 2B pencil and some pens for adding patterns to your watercolors
- sketchbook (for planning paintings and testing colors)
kneaded eraser
- watercolor palette with large mixing area or a white plate for mixing colors
- a ruler
- a color wheel if you have one
- a permanent black magic marker
- a Generals white charcoal pencil would also be helpful for planning shapes (optional)
- an old cheap toothbrush
- a sharp craft knife (the inexpensive kind with the clip off blades works best)
- a roll of clear adhesive con-tact brand contact paper (Make sure it is Con-tact brand as this has just the right amount of adhesive.)) You should be able to find most of these items at Jerry’sartarama.com or dickblick.com or Amazon.com
