Doris Williamson Mapes: Still Going Strong

Karin Hall-Willis | Published on 1/10/2026

Some time in 1970 Doris had the idea to start a watercolor society. She accomplished that the same year where she, and others started The Mid-Southern Watercolorist Society which as you can see is still going strong 56 years later. We are excited that the Historic Arkansas Museum is showing a selection of her works through October of this year.

The Arkansas Democrat Gazette published a wonderful article (linked below) which you can read if you have a subscription to the paper. We would encourage you to visit the exhibition if you have time. It is located on the second floor and is entitled "A Force of Nature".

Doris was a wonderfully prolific artist and her work has hung on many prestigious walls, including The White House (The Triptych shown above).
